Gift Ideas for a New Relationship: What Fits Each Stage
Updated:
Gift ideas for a new relationship should be small and precise. Big and expensive quickly reads as pressure in the first months. What fits depends on how long you've known each other, so the ideas below are sorted by stage: the first weeks, the first months, six months, the first anniversary of meeting. At the end you'll find what to give friends who have just fallen in love.
The rule for the start: better too small than too big
At the start of a relationship, every gift carries a message you don't fully control. An expensive watch after three weeks says: I'm further along than you. A weekend trip after the second date says: I've already planned how this goes on. That can be lovely if you're both at the same point. Often you aren't.
A small gift that shows you listened says only: I thought of you. That's exactly right at the beginning. Rule of thumb: the value of a gift grows with the relationship, not with the infatuation.
The first weeks
At this stage you don't really need an occasion. If you still want to bring something, make it something that happens in passing.
- The book you talked about at your last meeting, with a sentence on the first page.
- A bag of the pastry the person said you can only get in their hometown. If you find it, that's worth more than any bouquet.
- Two tickets to something you mentioned while getting to know each other: a concert, an exhibition, a cinema showing old films.
- A home-cooked meal, if you've already been at each other's place. Nothing elaborate, just what you do best.
Better not: jewelry, perfume, clothing. It's too close, too early and rarely matches a taste you don't know yet.
While you're still getting to know each other, good questions are often the nicer thing to bring than an object. You'll find many of them in the get to know you questions for couples, and for a special evening, the 36 questions to fall in love.
After about three months
Now you know the other's favorite things a little. Gifts can get more personal, but still on the small side.
- A playlist with songs that belong to your first weeks, with a line per song on why.
- An evening you plan completely: place, food, program. The person only has to show up.
- A shared photo, printed and framed, small. Large is a wall, small is a shelf.
- Something for a hobby the person is just starting and hasn't bought anything for yet.
Better not: couple accessories with both names. At this stage some people find that sweet and others find it too much, and you don't yet know which kind you're dealing with.
Six months together: gift ideas
For some couples, half a year is the first moment they consciously celebrate the relationship. It doesn't have to be a big event, but an evening with something special fits well.
- A jar with small slips of paper, each with a moment from the first six months that you like to think about. The person opens one per day.
- A trip to a place you've both talked about but never gone to.
- A letter in which you write down three things you've noticed about the person in this half year. Specific, not general. "How you talked to the lost kid at the station" is a sentence, "You're so sweet" is not.
- A cooking class or a workshop you do together. Learning something new together is a lovely experience, especially early in a relationship.
Better not: a gift that assumes a year of future, like a trip next summer when you haven't talked about it yet.
The first anniversary of meeting: a gift with a memory
A year after you first met, the day is the first real anniversary for some couples. A good gift for it picks up the first meeting.
- An evening at the place of your first date. Same café, same table if possible.
- A small album with one photo per month of the first year and a line underneath.
- Two lists: each of you writes down, on your own, what you remember from the first year, no peeking. Then you lay them side by side. Almost always one list has something the other forgot.
- A letter to the both of you that you open on the second anniversary of meeting.

The first holidays, the first birthday
If the holidays or a birthday fall in the first months, it gets tricky. An occasion calls for a gift, but the relationship is still young. Bring it up. "Are we doing gifts, and if so, how big?" sounds unromantic and spares you both an awkward evening where one hands over a book and the other a trip.
If you don't agree on anything, stay in the middle:
- A gift that belongs to a conversation you've had. The album by the band you discovered on the second date.
- A shared evening as the gift, such as a concert or a cooking class, dated after the occasion.
- For a birthday, something the person enjoys on their own: a book, a ticket to their team's game, a class for a hobby.
The card can say what you enjoyed about the first weeks. In new relationships, that's often what gets kept the longest.
When you don't see each other often
Some relationships start at a distance, across two cities or shift schedules that rarely overlap. Then the best gift is one that fills the days between meetings.
- A package with small envelopes, one for each day until you see each other again.
- A voice message for each evening of a week, recorded beforehand.
- A shared ritual, for example answering the same question every day. Us2 is made for exactly that: one question a day, each of you answers on your own, by text or voice message, and you see the other's answer only once you've given yours. You can't give the app as a gift, but you can start it together; the other person only needs a link.
A gift for friends who are newly in love
Sometimes you're not looking for a gift for your new partner but for a friend who has just fallen in love. For a birthday, for moving into their first place together, or simply because you're happy for them. Then something the two can use together fits, without being too solemn.
- Two movie tickets or a voucher for the restaurant neither has been to.
- A card game with questions so they can get to know each other even better. What matters in such games is covered in the guide on a card game for couples.
- An invitation to dinner at your place, as a foursome or a threesome. That's often the loveliest sign that you welcome the new person at your friend's side.
- A jar of date ideas, for evenings when the two of them don't know what to do.
Better not: jokes about the relationship's future, wedding hints or baby things. For people newly in love, that is rarely funny when it comes from outside.
What means the most to people newly in love
At the start of a relationship, people remember attention more than gifts. The pastry from the hometown, the letter with three precise sentences, the evening when someone planned everything. If you're not sure what to give, give something that shows you listened.
