Would You Rather Questions for Couples: Light to Deep
Updated:
With "would you rather" you have to decide, even when both options are useless or both are great. That's exactly why would you rather questions for couples are so good: the choice shows what matters to you, and the reasoning behind it is usually more interesting than the answer. Below you'll find over 50 questions in four levels, from silly to serious.
How to play as a pair
One person asks the question, the other answers and says why. Then the first answers the same question. Done. No scoreboard, no winners.
What makes the game better:
- Don't dodge. "It depends" doesn't count, you have to decide.
- Ask follow-ups. If someone says "I'd rather be able to fly", ask: where to first?
- Answer first, compare after. You can also both write your choice on a slip and reveal at the same time. Often you chose the same thing for completely different reasons.
- Swap halfway through: in the first round you ask, in the second the other does.
One question an evening can be enough if it's a good one. You don't have to work through the list.

Would you rather questions to make you think
Some decisions have no right answer. That's exactly why it's worth talking them through as two.
- Would you rather be very good at one thing for life or decent at many things?
- Would you rather know when you'll die, or how?
- Would you rather forget everything that hurt you or keep everything that shaped you?
- Would you rather live in a world where nobody lies, or in one where everyone can forgive any mistake?
- Would you rather be famous with little private life, or unknown and free?
- Would you rather be 20 again or keep your current age with today's knowledge?
- Would you rather correct a mistake that taught you a lot, or leave it?
- Would you rather make a decision alone or together with others, even if that's slower?
- Would you rather have everybody like you, or have a few people truly understand you?
- Would you rather always hear the truth in a relationship or sometimes be gently spared?
With the last questions, someone may tell you something you didn't know before. Listen then, before you judge. If old hurts come up that stay with you, a conversation with a couples counselor or therapist can help.
Keep talking afterwards
The best question after any answer is the simplest: "Why?" After that: "When did you first notice that?" With two follow-ups you turn a game into a conversation. You'll find more questions in this direction in our lists of questions to make you think and philosophical questions.
If you'd rather point at others than decide, try who's most likely to. For evenings with more choice we've collected games for couples.
Building your own questions
The best would you rather questions come from your own daily life. A pattern to build your own: two things you both know, and one of them is a sacrifice. "Would you rather give up your breakfast or your evening walk?" only works for people with a breakfast and an evening walk. The more specific the question, the better the answer.
Another trick: change a question until it hurts. "Would you rather live in Rome or Paris?" is nice. "Would you rather live in Rome, where I can't find a job, or in Paris, where I'd be happy but you wouldn't?" gets you talking.
Where Us2 fits
A question a day that you both answer separately has something of this game, just without the either-or. In Us2 you only see the other's answer once you've answered yourself. Afterwards you talk about it, like in a chat. For long answers you can record a voice message instead, which comes with a text transcript.
On Us2 you can try it for three days without payment details, in the browser, on iPhone or on Android.
